Sirval Monroe came to Michigan from New York.  He settled in Bangor in the 1870's going into the restaurant and confectionery business.  His store was on the west side of Railroad Street where he specialized in oysters, fresh cod and ice cream in their seasons.  Eventually, he purchased the Russell House Hotel in 1885 on the east side of Railroad Street and placed a restaurant in that hotel.  Mr. Monroe was married and had at least one son named Andrew J.     Monroe was a common name in the Bangor area with J.R. Monroe being one of the first white people passing through and C.J. Monroe organizing one of the first banks in Bangor.  There is a good possibility that Sirval Monroe was a relative.  We would like to hear from any Monroe relatives.
