This is a picture of Roy Nicholas in his grocery store. Mr. Nicholas was a very popular businessman in town and was fondly known as Roy Nick. Today many older members of this community can still remember buying penny candy from this gentleman's store. After High School, Roy went to work for Lewis McKinney at the Leader. He went into the grocery business with his father in 1916 at a location where the Bangor Tavern is today. Later the business was relocated to the other side of town next to Miller's Hardware Store. He was an avid baseball fan and played in high school and for several years after his education. Eventually, he managed the Bangor Cubs baseball team. At one time, he offered $5 to anyone on the team who would hit a homerun in a game. |
